Communities of practice

About 8 years ago i was involved in some Community of Practice initiatives that Sun Life Financial adopted for their software testing groups, they still use these groups and from this article, albeit a bit dated it looks like they have a structure that is particularly useful for them. This term is often used for technical and social networking type groups and read here for more info on this. A friend @edeljennings recently posted this slideset on her twitter and i think it gives some great insights to communities of practice and their formation and nurturing requirements. Architectures for Conversation (ii): What Communities of Practice can mean for Information Architecture

They say building CoP are all about cultivation and i'm looking forward to cultivating the Aniketos community for the next while although i am learning about the future challenges this role might pose.

Irish rail staff using twitter to find cat's owner on the dart

This article shows an example of how our social media tools such as twitter can help Irish citizens in daily life activities and that staff at Irish rail were kind enough to care!

recent CAO DoS attack..should it concern us? is our government taking this intrusion seriously?

Does ireland need to bring in new legislation to deal with denial of service attacks? This article in the Sunday Business Post does a good job of illustrating the shortcoming of our government in providing legislation and any deterrence to fraudsters!

Currently, Irish law does not contain a specific criminal offence to deal with denial-of-service attacks, which means that the person or group behind the CAO attack, if they are found, might escape prosecution. In other jurisdictions, such as England, these attacks have been addressed by new legislation.

Here, however, the relevant law dates back to 1991, was drafted before internet use was common and doesn’t specifically deal with this situation. As far back as 2001, an international treaty was agreed - the Cybercrime Convention - which specifically deals with denial of service attacks.

In March 2002, the then taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, promised that the convention would be transposed into Irish law. Almost a decade later, however, there is still no sign of any legislation from the Department of Justice, hardly surprising!

just mentioned to a colleague that we hope to head to Woodstock, Inistioge for a picnic/BBQ sometime soon. Its a great place, tree lined avenues, walled gardens, open spaces for running about- highly recommended for these summer days!

How green is cloud computing?

I read this article from Tom Raftery and decided that its an important issue that needs to be highlighted more. Transparency is key, once there are energy metrics that are commonly adopted it seems that a key success factor of all large IT corporations (Amazon, IBM, Google), should be to publish their energy metrics and have a vision and operational objectives in place to work toward.

Fenor Duathalon... 'in the bag'

Una and I finished the Duathalon in 1hr29mins, but alas we were very close to the back of the pack with less that 15 /100 people behind us. It was pretty tough...we were in the minority of people as we had hybrid type bikes and for these kind of events its racing bikes all the way! Also a bit more training might have kept us up with the pack but hey it was our first duathalon and we enjoyed it.

Flying high..tool that monitors air traffic

Flightradar is a really cool app that shows all current air traffic -i'd not seen this before and someone on twitter said Aer Lingus has resumed flying and i just loved it! thanks @patphelan

Of course its of no real use to me but I like to see technology bring us closer to things that we can't often see or control.
